Super Typhoon Uwan: Luzon Braces for Another Powerful Storm (2025)

A potential super typhoon looms over the Philippines.

The Philippines, still reeling from the devastation of Typhoon Tino, is now facing the prospect of another powerful storm. PAGASA, the country's weather bureau, is closely monitoring a tropical depression outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). This depression is expected to intensify, and here's where it gets controversial: it could evolve into a super typhoon within days.

As of Wednesday morning, November 5, the tropical depression had sustained winds of 55 km/h, but it's predicted to strengthen rapidly. By Saturday, November 8, it could reach super typhoon status. The depression is currently located east of Mindanao and is moving erratically, but forecasts suggest it will shift northwest and then head west-northwest.

PAGASA notes that while there's uncertainty, there's an increasing chance of landfall in Northern or Central Luzon on Monday, November 10. This means that parts of Luzon and Samar Island could be hit by fierce winds, and the weather bureau may issue tropical cyclone wind signals as early as Friday evening or Saturday morning to give these areas time to prepare.

If the incoming storm, which would be named Uwan, becomes a super typhoon, the highest wind signal, Signal No. 5, would be in effect. PAGASA warns that weather conditions could deteriorate as early as Sunday, November 9, and potentially life-threatening stormy conditions may occur over Northern and Central Luzon by Monday and Tuesday, November 11.

And this is the part most people miss: the storm surge warnings. PAGASA may release these as early as Saturday, with a high risk of coastal flooding in Northern Luzon and the eastern coast of Central Luzon. The country's seaboards could also experience hazardous conditions, with waves reaching phenomenal levels by Sunday.

So, while the exact path and intensity of the storm are still uncertain, one thing is clear: the Philippines is facing a potentially devastating weather event. It's a reminder of the power and unpredictability of nature. What do you think? Do you think the Philippines is prepared for a super typhoon? Share your thoughts in the comments!
