Frustrated with having to wake your Pixel phone just to unlock it? You're not alone! Google has quietly brought back a convenient feature in the latest Android 16 update that lets you unlock your phone with your fingerprint, even when the screen is off. This is a game-changer for Pixel users, but it's not available to everyone.
This nifty Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock feature, which allows you to unlock your phone with a simple touch, has made a comeback in the Android 16 QPR2 update. This update is the second major Android 16 update of the year. Imagine the ease of unlocking your phone instantly, without the extra step of waking the screen!
The feature was initially introduced in Android 16 DP2, specifically for the Pixel 9 series. It was later expanded to include older Pixel models. But here's where it gets controversial... Google mysteriously removed the feature in subsequent beta builds, leaving users scratching their heads. Thankfully, it's back in the stable QPR2 update.
However, there's a catch: the feature isn't available for all Pixel phones. Users on Reddit are reporting the return of the option in their Fingerprint settings, with most confirmations coming from Pixel 9 and newer devices. While the Pixel 10 Pro XL has the feature, the Pixel 8 Pro, even with the latest software, is missing out.
So, why the discrepancy? The most likely explanation points to hardware limitations. The Pixel 9 series and newer models use an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, while older models, like the Pixel 9a, rely on optical scanners.
Ultrasonic scanners are more advanced, using an electronic pulse to detect your fingerprint through the display, even when the screen is off. Optical sensors, on the other hand, often rely on light from the display to read your fingerprint, making them less effective when the screen is off.
To enable Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock, go to:
- Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Fingerprint
You'll need a Pixel 9 or later device running the latest Android 16 update to see the toggle. The update is fairly large, so expect a longer download time.
And this is the part most people miss... This feature eliminates the need to enable Always-on Display, which keeps the screen constantly powered on. This can save battery life.
What do you think? Are you excited about the return of Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock? Does your Pixel have the feature? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below! Is it fair that older models are missing out?
