Get ready for a thrilling theatrical experience as Columbus North High School brings S.E. Hinton's iconic novel, "The Outsiders," to life on stage! This fall, the school's talented students will present a gripping adaptation, showcasing the clash between the Greasers and the Socs, two rival factions divided by social and economic backgrounds.
But here's where it gets controversial... In a twist of fate, the narrative flips when Ponyboy Curtis, the 14-year-old narrator, and his best friend, Johnny, find themselves on the run after a tragic incident. Their heroic act challenges societal norms and raises questions about judgment and the capacity for good and evil in all of us.
Director Justine Lykins, inspired by the movie adaptation and a cast heavy on male talent, chose "The Outsiders" to explore these complex themes. With a limited number of roles and an abundance of talented auditionees, Lykins decided to alternate between two casts, ensuring a unique experience for each performance.
"Seeing both casts is like witnessing two different shows," Lykins explains. "The students bring their own interpretations to the characters and lines, creating a fresh and exciting experience."
Junior Lou Grafelman, who plays Ponyboy on Thursday and Saturday, shares his enthusiasm: "It's pretty dang cool! I love this story, and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to bring it to life."
Stacie Simmons, a sophomore portraying Cherry Valence on Thursday and Saturday, adds, "Cherry's journey is eye-opening. She realizes that the Greasers are just people, and I'm excited to portray her and share this important message."
And this is the part most people miss... "The Outsiders" isn't just a story about social constructs; it's a powerful lesson for young adults. As Stacie puts it, "We shouldn't stereotype people based on their backgrounds. It's a classic tale with valuable lessons."
Don't miss this opportunity to support the theatre department and witness a thought-provoking performance.
