A celestial puzzle has ignited the imaginations of space enthusiasts: is the newly discovered comet C/2025 V1 Borisov connected to the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS? The discovery has sparked intense speculation across social media, with many wondering if this comet is a mini-probe sent from its interstellar cousin.
C/2025 V1 Borisov, spotted recently, has been the subject of much debate. Unlike typical comets, it reportedly lacked a tail, adding to the mystery. However, despite initial excitement, the object is not of interstellar origin. It hails from the Oort cloud, a vast region thought to contain billions of icy bodies that formed around 4.6 billion years ago. Comets also populate the Kuiper belt, which is also home to dwarf planets such as Pluto.
The comet was first observed by G. Borisov on November 2, 2025. Adding to the intrigue, C/2025 V1 Borisov is set to reach its perihelion on November 16. It will be closest to Earth on November 11, at a distance of approximately 103,119,940 kilometers or 0.68 AU.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Professor Avi Loeb, a Harvard astrophysicist, has weighed in on the matter. He states that C/2025 V1 Borisov is unrelated to 3I/ATLAS if it did not utilize non-gravitational propulsion. The minimum separation between the two orbits is 75 million kilometers (0.5 AU), and they never came closer than 225 million kilometers (1.5 AU) without propulsion. The observed non-gravitational acceleration of 3I/ATLAS is insufficient to explain the gap.
Professor Loeb attributes the origin of C/2025 V1 Borisov to the Oort cloud, explaining that if the comet's motion is traced back to a distance of 1,000 times the Earth-Sun separation (AU), where planetary influences are minimal, the resulting orbital eccentricity would likely be less than 1. A minor gravitational nudge from Jupiter near perihelion could cause an Oort Cloud object to appear slightly hyperbolic in the heliocentric orbital fit.
